At yesterday’s 62nd Grammy Awards Ceremony, 18-year-old Billie Eilish won a whopping 5 awards– of which 4 were in major categories. Winning golden statuettes for album, record and song of the year, and best new artist, Eilish is only the second artist (and the first woman!!) to win the Big Four.
Aside from the obvious major achievement, I think her win is monumental for other reasons. I really love Billie Eilish as an artist because she has a soft voice. She doesn’t belt. Actually, she doesn’t sing particularly loudly at all. Eilish has incredible range (see her song “when the party’s over” that crosses 2 whole octaves) & complete control of her vocals. But she uses her head voice most of the time, which is different than the chest voice of most pop stars. For her to be this successful speaks volumes (pun intended). If you ask me, that’s even more impressive than some of today’s pop stars’ strong voices.
Not to mention this girl is 18!!
Basically I just think Billie’s wins speak to her talent, song-writing, and the fact that she is unapologetically herself. Above it all, she was incredibly humbled by the awards, and even said Ariana Grande deserved album of the year. It’s refreshing to see someone who isn’t a big voice or fit the usual “pop star” bill, win major awards for their music. It’s also incredible inspiration for young artists and especially young girls.
I, for one, love that she won because I myself don’t have a particularly strong voice, but seeing her success also means the industry is changing.
If you haven’t listened to Billie Eilish’s album, you’re missing out.. listen here.
In other Grammy news: Vampire Weekend took home their second award for Best Alternative Album with Father of the Bride, and I’m beaming. So well deserved! They’re the only ones to have received that award twice, having won in 2013 with Modern Vampires of the City. But you guys already know I’m obsessed with VW. Listen to their album!
